Peer tutoring started at Nanmo in October of 2018. The tutors, a group of Grade 12 students from the leadership club, work in pairs with their partner Grade 10 student. They coordinate a time to meet with each other and share learning skills. Meetings are always held in the library. Grade 12s act not only as a teacher but also as a learning partner. They discuss the topic of study, involving science and literary studies. In pairs, they edit English essay, solve questions on literary studies or correct grammar mistakes. Other than study, they also talk about school life at Nanmo, even share experience on hockey. This process benefits both sides, creating a strong learning atmosphere at Nanmo.

Eric Chen in Grade 10 shared his opinion towards the program: “It is a way for me to learn more about the program in BC curriculum. My tutor clarifies some knowledge points that are confusing for me. It’s rather helpful, and gladly my grade is improved. My tutor and I now become friends.”

Cici Lu in Grade 10 comments: “Since BC program is a new system for me. I’m not familiar with the school life here. Besides learning together, we also share experience of school life, like ‘how to participate effectively in teamwork’. However, sometimes we may forget about the meeting; I think we should both attach importance to it.”

When mentioning areas for improvement, Alex Ji from Grade 12 expresses his thoughts: “There can be more initiative among the Grade 10, since they are the side of receiving help. However, they seem to pay little attention on it, even omit the appointment sometimes.”

As a more mature learner, Grade 12 students share their own experience, giving recommendations to the Grade 10 on both study and school life in peer tutoring. It is also a way for mutual learning and gain.
