I left Nanmo three months ago and am now studying Engineering at the University of Victoria. Life here is definitely “fantabulous”! The campus is big and I have lots of freedom. However, university life is also challenging for me. When I first started my courses, I found out that there were very few Chinese students taking the same courses as me, which meant that most of my classmates were local students. While seeing other people making friends very easily, it was very difficult for me to get involved into my new community because of the language. This resulted in me feeling lonely most of the time. After living here for a month, I realized that one of the most important things to be successful in university is to have good English skills. I didn’t focus on my English enough when I was at Nanmo and I feel extremely regretful now. Even though I’m studying Engineering, I spend 70% of my time focussing on my English now. Therefore, my suggestion is, no matter you are a grade 10, 11 or 12 student, you should consider your English courses as the most important ones to have the best English skills possible. If you don’t do that, you will struggle when you get to university, just like me. Lastly, I really miss everyone at Nanmo so much! Feel free to contact me if you are curious about university life.
