Nanmo BC’s grade 12s are going to graduate in late June. To celebrate the graduation, all grade 12 students will be attending a banquet, as is tradition. Last year, COVID-19 became a big obstacle for the G12s wanting to have the banquet. Fortunately, the grads of 2021 have the pleasure to enjoy a graduation banquet. The banquet will be prepared and held with the help of Ms. Liu, Ms. Johnston, and the grad committee.

On April 28th, the committee started its first meeting, to clarify each member’s role and duty. There are ten jobs to do, which are accounting, logistics, fundraising, preparing gifts, activities and performance arranging, promotion, technology section, photography, and MC. Ms. Liu and Ms. Johnston set a deadline for the committee, to make sure everything progresses on time. The most important thing to do is to book the venue, and Helen Huang and William Chen take charge of that. They need to communicate with the hotel managers a lot and haggle with them about the price. It is a hard job because they need to find a lot of hotel choices in a short time. Some of the hotels are expensive, and some of the hotels have a bad location or are missing some important equipment. After finding at least 9 hotels, the committee came out with 3 appropriate options for the banquet venue. A survey was posted as well, to investigate the students’ preferences. The winner of the survey was the Shangri-La hotel.

However, the hotel booking part did not go well. The committee cannot book Shangri-La because the survey took too much time, and we missed the deadline for signing the contract. To deal with this emergency, the committee had another meeting with the instructors and came out with a solution. Helen found another hotel called Garden Hotel. It fit all of our requirements. Therefore, the committee announced the information about the new hotel immediately.

Other preparations for the banquet are ongoing as well. Vicky Xu and Kerensa Lu are taking charge of designing the signing wall and the welcoming space. It took them a lot of time to discuss and communicate with the stores. Nancy Gu and Ryan Zhou, the 2 MCs, are writing the script for the banquet. They arranged five performances, making the banquet more entertaining. Todd Shi is taking charge of the ticket order. He spent a lot of time negotiating with the stores as well. Furthermore, the Marketing students participated in designing the tickets for the banquet. It saved a lot of time for the committee. Accountants Charlize Hu and Crystal Zhu have recorded all the costs so far. It is important to record the spending for each committee member.

Now, the committee is charging the ticket price. As soon as the committee receives the money, things can settle down. We are all looking forward to the banquet!
