I haven’t been back for three years since I left Wenzhou last time. Whenever I taste the delicious food in my hometown or hear my parents mention Wenzhou, I can’t help thinking of my grandparents. For three years I couldn’t go back for various reasons, such as IELTS and the epidemic. In the past three years, my parents have gone back several times, each time because of my grandmother’s health condition. I heard them say grandma had cancer. The good news was that the cancer was benign, but it also raised concerns about grandma and grandpa’s health. So, I was very excited when I learned that I finally had the chance to go back this summer vacation.
I still remember the story I was told since childhood about my grandparents. My Chinese was not very good when I was a child. My grandfather used to be a Chinese teacher. He volunteered to coach me after he knew my Chinese was bad. He sacrificed his retirement to help me every time I went back to visit them. When it was time for me to go to primary school, my grandfather bought me some ancient poems and taught me to read. Every time my grandfather taught me ancient poetry, I would look at the color picture and ask my grandfather what the poem meant. I used to mix the “Romance of The Three Kingdoms” and other historical stories with western stories when I spoke with grandpa. Although I was talking nonsense, he just looked at me with a smile and patiently corrected me.
Wenzhou is a national historical and cultural city. The name Wenzhou began to be used in the Tang Dynasty, a city with more than 2000 years of history. Wenzhou is the pioneer area of China’s private economic development and the front line of reform and opening up. Wenzhou is known as the cradle of Chinese mathematicians, the hometown of Chinese southern Opera, the hometown of Chinese seafood and eggs, and the capital of Chinese shoes. Wenzhou people are called Oriental Jews by Chinese people. Wenzhou’s famous scenic spots are Yandang Mountain, Nanxi River and more. Today’s Wenzhou has kept pace with the times on the basis of its ancient architecture. There are gothic buildings in the middle of the commodity shops in Wuma Street, which is like walking into a prosperous old city. It is advanced and not short of classical beauty.
