Mr. Jay Chen is a new teacher in Nanmo this year. Even though he is new here, he is naturally and quickly immersed himself in our school community. For his education, he studied Theatre Production Management at SFU in the Fine Arts program, then studied Education at UBC, and finally earned a Master of Education back in SFU. Mr. Chen teaches Career Life Education 10, Choir 11/12, Composition 11, Drama 10/11/12 and strongly shows his professional skills in Fine Arts. Many students think that he is a responsible teacher who is always willing to help them with their English writing.

Mr. Chen had a lot of work experience in the past which led to his curiosity about being a teacher. Teaching not only enriches his work experience but also helps him to keep reviewing the knowledge he learned throughout his early adulthood. He worked for a TV station, in the fashion industry and dabbled in construction work, such as masonry, bricklaying, drywalling, concrete forming, plumbing, etc. In addition, he was in accounting, website maintenance and marketing all at the same time.

In terms of his time outside work, he loves analyzing music, watching movies, and reading non-fiction books. He is quite versatile since he has explored the skills of singing, dancing, and playing all kinds of instruments. Reading biographies, textbooks and research papers are the major non-fiction books he likes to read to keep to his life-long learning passion. Accumulating his knowledge continuously is his passion. Moreover, he is interested in rock climbing, skating, swimming, kayaking, archery, badminton, weightlifting, parkour and yoga to maintain good health. He always regards “Carpe Diem” and “Ductus Exemplo” as his personal philosophy. The former bears the meaning that one should enjoy life while one can while the latter conveys the idea that we should live by example – be the best version of oneself. These mottos propel him to set up a good example for the students in Nanmo.
