The Star Student for this month is Katherine Deng from 10A.
Different from other Grade 10s who may be too shy to talk to their teachers, Katherine has a good relationship with her teachers. She communicates with the teachers a lot. When she has questions, she goes and asks her teachers during office hours. She also shares things with her teachers other than study problems. For example, she likes to talk with Mr.Dyck, who is her ELL10 teacher, about “Game of Thrones”. She believes that because she is so open to communicating with her teachers, this may be the reason why she was chosen.
Katherine told me that she really enjoys our Real Talk competition. “It’s really unique. My friends who are in other international schools don’t have this activity. Real Talk can indeed stimulate you to speak English and help you adopt the English environment.” She said.
In her spare time, Katherine participates in our school Frisbee team. She recommended her fellow students to do sports: “There was a time when I always stayed up late at night, I would have a bad mental status the next day. Running or having exercises made me felt better and more energetic.” She also likes to play Chinese zither and do handcrafts. Similar to other teenage girls, Katherine listens to Taylor Swift’s songs and watches TV shows at home.
When I asked her about her goal and dream for the future, Katherine told me that she wants to study at UBC and major in Marketing or Psychology. For this goal, she will work hard and learn from her fellow students and grade 12s who have received good offers from universities.
I can tell that Katherine is a really mature student, who has a clear goal, good study habits and a positive mind. I hope that in three years, she will receive her dream offer.
