When Terry Fox was 18 years old, doctors discovered cancer in his right leg. It did not only change his life, but also the world forever. When he started his first run across Canada at the age of 21, no one could imagine that he would run 42 kilometers every day, which is equal to a full marathon, on one leg regardless of the terrible weather. His actions caught considerable public attention, and donations towards cancer research began to spring up. Before Terry Fox passed away, he also made a speech to the public, “I will try my best to make it, but if I don’t make it, the Marathon of Hope’ will continue.”
Here at Nanmo, we are following his steps. By running, donating and selling things to collect money, we are helping cancer research to move forward. On October 25, 2019, starting with exciting music, all NANMO students gathered on the basketball court and ran for hope for 20 minutes. Some BC teachers gave students high fives to encourage them not to stop running. Is Terry Fox Run just about running? Absolutely not! The exciting “Pie in the face” time came back! After our 20-minute run, students were looking forward to pie teachers in the face. Students who donated money to cancer research by purchasing Terry Fox Run souvenirs had a chance to be selected to pie teachers in the face. Some students who posted pictures on WeChat Moments to let more people know about our Terry Fox Run also got more chances. Thanks to all the volunteers who prepared this stirring activity ahead of time, NANMO students enjoyed the run, making the “Marathon of Hope” continue. Let’s contribute to cancer research together!
