Hello everyone, this is Eric Yao, a graduate of the 2021 BC program at Nanyang Model Private High. Currently, a new sophomore majoring in both Media, Journalism and Digital Cultures and New Media Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough. I am very honored to receive the invitation from Nanmo to share some personal learning experiences and life experiences at the University of Toronto for the students who are still confused about their future and how the university is different from high school.
First of all, I would like to talk about the preparation and research that should be done before the start of university. Many students do not prepare for their future studies in the summer before the start of university, so they do not know anything about their future plans after the start of university. For University of Toronto students, the course selection and major planning are what you need to know in your free time after graduation. In particular, graduation requirements and course planning can be found on Acorn, the official academic management platform of the University of Toronto. After you have thoroughly understood these contents, I believe you will have a general idea of your whole future life at university.
When it comes to the aspect of study and life on campus, I think the level of English proficiency is always the most essential part. Without a good foundation in English, you will hardly be able to do anything in university. Some problems often seen on social media platforms are actually caused by language communication problems, and I think the best solution is to communicate with classmates, teaching assistants, and professors more, so as to communicate continuously and practice your speaking, listening, and writing skills. These people will always be your good companions in your academic life. Meanwhile, some like-minded people will also be the best help in your university life. From my experience, the University of Toronto Chinese Students and Scholars Association is the best place for you to practice and showcase yourself, as well as to meet new people, which can help you a lot in a city that is completely new to you.
Last but not least, I hope that each student will not be too anxious about their future, enjoy their high school life, and study hard at the same time, and I wish you all the best in getting into the school of your dreams. Velut arbor ævo!
